Dores excel at Palmer Cup, other MG notes!

Vanderbilt Golf

Hunter Stewart goes 4-0 and helps lead U.S. to title, Schwab finishes his matches 2-2 for Europe.

The Commodores’ stellar play has continued since the NCAA Championship, with Vanderbilt golf excelling throughout the country over the weekend in a number of high-profile amateur tournaments.

Palmer Cup

Senior Hunter Stewart and sophomore Matthias Schwab participated in the Palmer Cup this weekend at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., in a Ryder Cup-type format that saw the top 10 collegiate players from the United States face off against the top 10 from Europe.

Stewart did not lose a match over the weekend, going 4-0 in helping the United States to an 18-12 victory over the Europeans, becoming the first player since Andrew Yun of the U.S. to win all four matches (2012). Stewart was dominate in his singles matches, defeating Mathias Eggenberger, 6 & 5, on Saturday and then knocked off Thomas Detry of Illinois, 4 & 3 on Sunday. In opening foursomes play, Stewart and partner Robby Shelton of Alabama defeated Clement Sordet and Rowin Caron, 3 & 2, and then in fourball competition, the duo once again defeated Sordet and Rowin, 1 up. Shelton also finished his Palmer Cup at 4-0.

Schwab garnered two of the Europeans’ points over the weekend with a 1-up singles victory on Sunday over Carr Vernon, and paired with Max Rottluff in fourball play to defeat Anders Albertson and Jack Maguire of the U.S., 2 & 1. Schwab battled with Beau Hossler of Texas before losing the 18th hole to fall one down in first-round singles action on Saturday, and lost his opening foursomes match to Kyle Jones and Carr Vernon 3 & 2 on Friday. He was paired with Rottluff in that match as well.

Schwab and Stewart also impressively swept the sportsmanship awards and were named recipients of the Michael Carter Award, which is presented to the Palmer Cup participant that best represents the qualities and ideals of sportsmanship, integrity and upholding of the game.

Palmetto Amateur

Vanderbilt placed two in the top 10 at the prestigious Palmetto Amateur, with rising senior Zack Jaworski and incoming freshman Will Gordon each finishing in a tie for eighth at the Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C., after carding a one-over par, 281, in four rounds of action.

Martin Finishes 2nd at Alabama Amateur

Incoming freshman Patrick Martin finished second at the Alabama State Amateur over the weekend after carding an eight-under par, 276 (68-71-69-68) at the Mountain Brook Club In his hometown of Birmingham. Martin finished four shots back of champion Will Cannon and three shots better than Tom Lovelady, who currently plays at the University of Alabama.

Vanderbilt wins Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate
Commodores defeat second-place Tulsa by eight strokes, Matthias Schwab finishes in a tie for 2nd individually.

The Vanderbilt men's golf team captured their first tournament of the fall and their fourth of the Scott Limbaugh era Tuesday afternoon in Jacksonville at the Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate, winning the tournament by eight strokes over second-place Tulsa with a final total of 876 (292-291-293). Freshman Matthias Schwab was the Commodores' top finisher, ending the event in a tie for second with a score of even par-216 (75-69-72)

The Commodores, who led after a blustery 36 holes on Monday at the Deerwood Country Club, maintained their lead and were steady in their final 18 holes on their way to the championship. Schwab, Hunter Stewart, and Zack Jaworski each fired an even-par 72, while the other two Vanderbilt players in the lineup, Carson Jacobs and Ben Fogler, each carded a third-round 77. Charlie Ewing played as an individual and finished Tuesday with a 75.

Four Vanderbilt players finished in the top 11 individually, with Schwab's second-place finish leading the way. Stewart carded a final score of 220 (67-81-72) to finish eighth, while Jaworski ended the tournament with a 222 (75-75-72) and finished in a tie for 11th. Ewing finished his tournament with a 221 (72-74-75), which was good for a tie for ninth.

Jacobs carded a 226 (75-74-77) to finish in a tie for 26th, while Fogler finished in a tie for 37th with a total of 228 (78-73-77).

"Obviously, I am very proud of how this team fought throughout the tournament," said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. "It was a team effort. The conditions were difficult again today and the guys were resilient when things didn't go the way they wanted them to go. It was a great way for us to finish the fall season. I am excited about this group but even more excited that we all know we can get better."

Individually, Tulsa's Logan McCraken won medalist honors, shooting a five-under par, 211.

The Eagle/Osprey Intercollegiate was the Commodores' final tournament of the fall. They return to the course in the spring at the Gator Invitational in Gainesville, Fla., on February 15-16.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vanderbilt Men's Golf
MG advances to Carmel Cup Championship Vanderbilt finishes second in stroke play, freshman Matthias Schwab wins individual title with a two-round total of 141.

Vanderbilt will take on UNLV Sunday morning at the legendary Pebble Beach Golf Club for the Carmel Cup championship after finishing with a two-round total of 730 (363-367), two strokes behind the Running Rebels, who ended stroke play in first place with a 728 (363-365). Freshman Matthias Schwab captured the individual title, shooting a 68 at Spyglass Hill on Saturday afternoon in route to a 141 (73-68), which was three strokes better than Zane Thomas of UNLV.

Vanderbilt and UNLV will face off in match play beginning at 7:40 a.m. for the championship, with Texas Tech and Arizona vying for third place beginning at 7:10 a.m. Pacific time.

Schwab set the pace with his 141, but junior Hunter Stewart was not far behind, finishing in a tie for third with a 145 (71-74). Sophomore John Voetsch ended stroke play in a tie for eighth with a 146 (69-77), senior Charlie Ewing finished 10th with a 148 (75-73), junior Ben Fogler in a tie for 14th with a 151, and Zach Herr in 22nd with a 75-84.

"Spyglass played tough this afternoon," said Vanderbilt head coach Scott Limbaugh. "I thought we hung in there very well and a couple of our guys finished really well. Unfortunately, we fell two shots short in the stroke play portion. However, we are looking forward to playing a very good UNLV team in the championship match tomorrow.

"I am really proud of Matthias," said Limbaugh. "He showed us today why he is one of the top freshman in the country. He battled all day and was tied for lead with four holes to go and birdied three of last four holes to win by three."
